Mine Industry Training Update - RRTO Induction Standard 11

rrto17Axial’s transition to the new training and workplace assessment requirements for mine site inductions has not been without the occasional challenge.

Since July, the Resources Registered Training Organisation Association Inc (RRTO) has ensured member organisations, like Axial, offer a quality standardised training program in accordance with Standard 11 set by the Queensland Mining Safety Inspectorate.

During the development of the new induction program, the RRTO worked directly with mining companies and contractors, the mining industry skill council, the inspectorate, unions and other stakeholders to map the scenario based classroom course and on-site assessment process to meet the stakeholders and legislative requirements.

While many mine sites across Australia have accepted this new process, on occasion, course participants have experienced issues with sign off on their workplace assessment book. The RRTO is continuing to work with individual mines to try to overcome these issues as they occur. As these changes only came into effect in July it will take some time for all the industry to gain a good understanding of the requirements and value of Standard 11.

Learning and Development Manager for Axial, Raven Steadman has worked extensively on developing the resources for the RRTO Standard 11 training program.

“It has been very exciting to be involved in designing this course with such varied stakeholders. The primary aim of the course is to improve the safety of workers by giving them a strong grounding in assessing risk in realistic scenario situations. With Standard 11, the RTO and the employer both have a responsibility to ensure a worker has had the training they need. So this course is a great first step for people in the learning process to become safe and responsible workers within the mining industry.” says Raven.

Axial is committed to providing the highest quality standard of safety training for the mines and continues to resolve issues experienced with the workplace assessment process.

Training Operations Manager Jill Rowe works on a case by case basis to address any problems course participants have experienced gaining access to particular mine sites.

“It has been a great experience to see all stakeholders coming together to make sure the introduction of the Standard 11 program has had strong acceptance across all areas of the industry. When issues have arisen, the mines and members of the Resources RTO have worked together to identify and solve them as quickly as possible. The mapping of mines sites induction program to the Resources RTO Standard 11 induction program has been an opportunity to establish a seamless transition for learners from the training room to the mine site.” says Jill.

The RRTO website publishes an up-to-date list of the mine sites which are accepting the RRTO Induction Statement of Completion. Visit:
