New RRTO induction for mine sites uses real-world scenarios

arrowgasWith Recognised Standard 11 introduced to mine induction training from July 1, 2011, Axial’s new RRTO Induction - Standard 11 Coal induction takes classroom training to the next level.

This engaging and innovative induction brings the mine site to the classroom, with students working in groups to solve real-world scenarios and safety issues.

The focus is on developing knowledge and skills that reflect current mine site safety practices.

We’ve already had some great feedback from students who are enjoying the new interactive format and interesting scenarios.

Below are some photos taken at a recent induction program in Axial’s classroom.

Photo 1 (below left): Understanding the various forms of PPE.

Training begins right at the very start of a typical work day. During the first scenario students learn how to select the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) for the task at hand.

During the second scenario students work in teams to discuss effective communication processes during a shift change over. Together the students evaluate issues from the last shift, delegate tasks to the appropriate persons, provide work site procedures and work instructions to each team member and ensure everyone is clear about their responsibilities.

Now it’s time to move on to a maintenance issue. However, before driving to the job, students must examine the vehicle and conduct a pre-operational check to discover any faults.

Once the vehicle has been deemed safe to drive students then work together to load the equipment using safe heavy-lifting practices.

During scenario 4 students examine the procedures for moving around a mine site, as well as how to use a radio for communication with other vehicles that may be in the area.

There has been an accident on site! During the related scenarios students learn to apply first aid procedures, assess risk and manage the process. Students also learn how to correctly complete the appropriate reports and documentation.
